"I became ever more closer with Tom, when my husband became sick. Tom & my husband were buddies and Tom asked him, “what can I do to help you through this”. My husband’s response was, “I love soup,” and I could tell from Tom’s expression that he was already overwhelmed by how much food he was already making for our 9/11 neighbors/victims. True to his words and to my husband’s glee, soups started arriving up to 2 times a week. And they were always different and wonderful creations. "Soon after 9/11/2001, I, Brigadier General Baumgarten became aware of the CERT program while on active duty on and after 9/11. At which point in time l put together a small group to initiate and build a CERT team here in Lower Manhattan. Tom Coyle was one of the first volunteers and became a dedicated, stalwart leader, completing the first training class of volunteers. With Coyle’s leadership and dedication the BPC CERT trained several hundred volunteers who subsequently learned critical skills such as medical triage, search and rescue, traffic control, fire- fighting and more. Our group went on to receive a Presidential Citation as I was asked to assist and send a group of volunteers  to help the people of Louisiana post hurricane Katrina in 2005"
